  2. Two Islands Response

“Two Islands” is a thought well-told story that is written and illustrated by Ivan Gantschev. In this story Ivan expresses a truthful moral of, “money can’t buy happiness”. This message is also told in the fabulous novel “I’m Not Her” written by Janet Gurtler. Both stories show how, you don’t have to be rich or have lots of money to be happy, enjoy who you are, and enjoy what you’re doing with your life. They also show that, you just have to have the ability to know what the negative and positive side of every story you’ll face in your life is, but also to find the happy side to the negative things.

In the novel “I’m Not Her” 18-year-old Kristina, who comes from very rich and wealthy family, is faced with bone cancer in her knee. Kristina’s mom, thinks positive and repeatedly says that her daughters cancer will be treated with the best treatments and best doctors possible, because, of all the money their family is so fortunate to have. Kristina is then in surgery getting her leg amputated, which her and her family knew would happen from the very beginning, since she was diagnosed with cancer. Kristina is now very depressed about what has happened to her leg, about the way her family made her feel because, they encouraged and promised that the chemo she went through would work, when it didn’t, and that they spent all of this money on different treatments that in the end was a waste of money and a waste of Kristina’s hope and promise. This relates to the story Two Islands because, in Two Islands the leader of the wealthy Island of Graynel promised his people that the bridge he would construct to build (“the longest bridge in the world”) would allow his people access to vacation on Greenel, a green, beautiful island, whenever they like. In the end of the story the island of Graynel and all of its people tipped over, and sank straight to the bottom of the ocean. Their island sank because they were using all of their money to make their people happy, and they were also using their money to put the people of Greenel down, and making them feel sad, because they started building the bridge even when the leader of Greenel disagreed with the plan. In both stories, their was a large waste of money, because the money ended up making people unhappy, it ended up making people displeased and it also proves that people shouldn’t always promise their promises. These stories are different because Janet Gurtler’s I’m Not Her is a personal situation, that shows how money cant buy happiness, but also throughout the story has many more messages. Gantschev’s Two Islands is more of a league/group situation, that almost sticks to one moral throughout the story: Money can’t buy happiness.

Overall, the stories, Two Islands and I’m Not Her show and truly represent the moral of “money can’t buy happiness”, in their own unique ways.
